STRUGGLES AS WOMEN IN OUR PERSONAL LIVES
                             by Marilyn LaStrape

We as Christian women face many struggles in our personal lives. These struggles involve family
relationships, time management, jobs, and health just to name a few. In our world, we hear the word
“struggling” virtually on a daily basis. What thoughts come to mind when we hear that word? When we are
struggling with anyone or anything, great effort and exertion is being made. This effort and exertion
involves physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual energy. This can be and often is extremely draining!

We struggle with family relationships. For those of us who are married with children, it is a constant
struggle on some level because our lives and the lives of our husbands, children, and grandchildren,
situations, and circumstances are always changing! This includes all the interactions we have with
mothers, fathers, siblings, grandparents, and all others that make up the extended family unit. We struggle
to keep a balance among all these people who need and/or want our attention!

Managing our time is a daily struggle. We as women tend to spread ourselves too thin because we believe
we have the responsibility of being all things to all people at all times! Some of us have never learned that
“Wonder Woman” was a TV show from the 1980’s and that’s all that it was -- a TV show based in fantasy!
God has given us the timeframe of 24/7 and that is all the time we need. If we had needed more, He would
have given us more. It is up to us to set priorities, create balance, and make the best use of the time God
has given us.

Those who work outside the home have the added struggle of keeping family and home functioning in an
acceptable, structured manner. Jobs should be viewed as a means to an end not the center, soul and
substance of all that is! God gave Adam work to do in the Garden of Eden. Work became toilsome labor
after the Fall. In His infinite wisdom, God gave husbands the responsibility to provide for the family. We as
wives would do well to remember that. God created us to be helpers for and to our husbands, not to run
the show!

We as women struggle with a host of health issues. Medical professionals tell us that the number one killer
of women in America is heart disease! Women are battling strokes, breast cancer, lung cancer, AIDS, and
the list goes on and on! Our bodies will begin to betray us through disease, illness, injury, neglect,
indulgences, or just from growing older. When we must face any of these health issues, we need take
heed to the warning signs! When our bodies began to betray us and we deny or ignore that betrayal, we
pay in pain and suffering!

Our Lord Jesus Christ recognized this need for balance between the spiritual and physical; the need for
balance between periods of work and rest. In Mark 6:7-13, Jesus sent out His twelve apostles to preach
the word that people would repent. Verse 13 says, “And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil
many who were sick and healed them.”Verses 30-31 say, “Then the apostles gathered to Jesus and told
Him all the things they had done and taught. And He said to them, ‘Come aside by yourselves to a
deserted place and rest a while.’ For there were many coming and going and they did not even have time
to eat.”

If we are to endure so we may continue to serve our Lord at our best; we will need time to rest, time to eat,
time away from all others, and time to care for our bodies. “To everything there is a season, a time for
every purpose under heaven.” (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
