Women of God
In a changing world, Christian women
hold on to an unchanging hand: God's hand.
Ruth: An Example for Prospective Wives/Mothers
                                     By Marilyn LaStrape

Ruth is one of only two women in scripture who have an inspired book that bears their name and
the account of their lives. The difference is in focus; Ruth was a Gentile and Esther was a Jew.
Ruth was a descendant of Moab, the firstborn son of Lot by his older daughter. (Genesis 19:36-
38) This Gentile woman is listed in the genealogy of our Lord and Savior in Matthew 1:5.

Ruth’s life was changed forever because of the love and devotion she had for Naomi her mother-
in-law. She gave up her culture, her people, and her language to accept the God of another
people, culture, and language. The relationship that had developed between these two women of
such diverse backgrounds was remarkable! Because of this relationship, Ruth chose to go with
Naomi when she returned to Bethlehem, Judah.

Ruth’s disposition, spirit, and moral fiber are unmistakable when she told Naomi; “Entreat me not
to leave you, or to turn back from following after you; for where you go, I will go; and wherever you
lodge, I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God, my God.” (Ruth 1:16) With these
words she made one of the greatest commitments recorded in scripture!

God’s divine providence is seen throughout the book of Ruth. Ruth’s story is about her interracial
marriage to an Israelite man, Boaz, but the story is not about her. From this marriage a child is
born who would be King David’s grandfather. David was the greatest king Israel ever had! From
this family bloodline Jesus Christ was born.

After Boaz and Ruth were married, the people and the elders said to him, “We are witnesses. The
Lord make the woman who is coming to your house like Rachel and Leah, the two who built the
house of Israel…because of the offspring which the Lord will give you from this young woman.”
(Ruth 4:11-12)

God has given us life to glorify and give honor to Him while He fulfills His purpose for creating us.
Psalm 115:1 says, “Not unto us, O Lord, not unto us, but to Your name give glory, because of Your
mercy, and because of Your truth.” God speaking of His people in Isaiah 43:6-7 said, “Bring My
sons…and My daughters from the ends of the earth – everyone who is called by My name, whom I
have created for My glory; I have formed him, yes, I have made him.”

We as sisters in Christ who are prospective wives need to understand if we want a “Boaz”, we are
going to have to be a “Ruth”! Our husbands need to know that we will do them good and not evil all
the days of our lives! (Proverbs 31:10-12) Our husbands need to know that we will be submissive
to them as God fulfills His purpose for creating us. (I Peter 3:1-2)

We as sisters in Christ who are prospective mothers need to understand that our greatest legacy
is the godly example we live before our children. As wives and mothers, our decisions and actions
have eternal consequences! “Her children rise up and call her blessed.” (Proverbs 31:29a)
“Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, but a woman who fears the Lord, she shall be praised.
Give her of the fruit of her hands, and let her own works praise her in the gates.” (Proverbs 31:30-
31)
