Saved By The Gospel

Paul said, "
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for
everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek"
(Rom. 1:16). This statement affirms that
salvation comes by way of the gospel. As a matter of fact it is called the "Gospel of your salvation" in
Ephesians 1:13.

The word gospel means good news. In this case, it would be the good news of Christ's death, burial and
resurrection. We find this declaration in 1 Corinthians 15:1-4:
"Moreover, brethren, I declare to you the gospel which I preached to you, which
also you received and in which you stand, by which also you are saved, if you hold
fast that word which I preached to you--unless you believed in vain. For I delivered
to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according
to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day
according to the Scriptures."
Jesus' death, burial and resurrection are the basic facts of the gospel that everyone must believe when
contemplating salvation.

The gospel is very important. It is the means by which people learn about God and His will. To make any
changes to it would be devastating. Paul admonishes,
" if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than
what you have received, let him be accursed"
(Gal. 1:9). It's amazing that in the religious world in which we
live there are so many gospels. One person claims salvation this way and another says you can be saved
another way. However, we only find one way in the Scriptures. Again Paul says,
"I marvel that you are
turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not
another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ"
(Gal. 1:6-7).
Regardless to what the popular opinion may be, there is only one gospel and one way to be saved and we
should all be ready to defend that way (Php. 1:17).

Not only does the gospel contain facts, such as the death, burial and resurrection of Christ, it also contains
commands to be obeyed and promises to enjoy. Some of the commands include believing in Jesus,
repenting of your sins, confessing Jesus, and being baptized so that you may enjoy the promise of
salvation. Truly, if we did not have the gospel we would be lost without direction.

(The Gospel must be obeyed. It begins with FAITH)
