An Example of Godliness
By Loretta Spencer
1Tim.4:8 Says, “For bodily exercise profiteth little: but godliness is profitable unto all things, having promise of the life that
now is and of that which is to come. I would like to begin by noticing some definition of words in this verse:
• Profit-a valuable return: Gain: to be of use: to derive benefit.
• Exercise-exertion made for the sake of training or physical fitness: a task or problem done to develop skill.
• Promise-to give ground for: expectation: a pledge to do or not to do something specified.
• Godliness-to be devout, denotes that piety which, characterized by a godly attitude, does that which is well pleasing
to him.
When we look at the words, profit, exercise, promise, and godliness, we should see that these words mean something. I
believe that God wants our physical body to be well taken care of in order for us to do his will and keep his
commandments.(John14:15) Therefore we should try to exercise and eat healthy.
However, what does it profit for a man to gain the whole world and loose his soul. Upon becoming a child of God, we
made a promise. That promise was to be His servant. Its okay to focus on the physical body, but our main goal should be
focusing on our spiritual body (mind).
Paul said that godliness is profitable unto all things. This means that Godly living should show up in our lives. Godliness
should be pressed upon our minds each and everyday. If we are to live godly we must exercise ourselves unto godliness.
The requirement for this is constant spiritual exercise. Paul’s reasoning for this is that bodily exercise profits for a little
while. On the other hand, mortifying the deeds of the body is an exercise that will profit throughout eternity. Tell me what
would it avail us as Christians, followers of Christ, to lift weights and jog and not mortify sin? Nothing!
The encouragement which we have in the way of godliness is the promise of life, not withstanding the difficulties and
discouragements that we meet within the realms of godliness. The apostle says it is profitable for all things, having the
promise of the life which now is and the one that is to come.
The life of a Christian is a life of labor and suffering and we must expect both. We must keep the faith and always put our
trust in the living God. Hebrews 11:6 says, “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must
believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.”
By dedication and devotion to the Almighty Jehovah, we will gain spiritural and eternal blessings. And as a matter of fact
this was the very thing that motivated those of old. The Hebrew writer again states, “By faith Moses, when he was born,
was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king's
commandment. By faith Moses, when was come to years, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter; Choosing
rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season; Esteeming the reproach of
Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt: for he had respect unto the recompense of the reward. (11:23-26) Let us
always remember to set a godly example, so that others who look on can see that we have been spiritually exercising. Let
us also pray that the growth of our spiritual body will lead others to ask the question, “What can I do to get in shape like
you?” Or in other words, “What must I do to be saved?”
